Venus Williams, Receives Wild Card for First Melbourne Major in Five Years.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
