The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company

This latest development intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur stated via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Plans

Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
