The gravest possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by researchers, ranging from a blistering 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.

Possible Extremes, Not Predictions

These effects, some of which are associated with irreversible climate shifts, are seen as unlikely but credible. The team explained that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had left the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The climate extremes we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are credible," said the lead researcher who oversaw the analysis. "The nation has been making preparations in the absence of the methods to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Severe Conditions Projections

Another collection of dire projections details the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be three times typical amounts.

This work was initiated as part of a national risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have cautioned that insufficient focus was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been criticised as being "very weak" by some observers.

A government spokesperson commented: "The climate emergency is at the center of our national priorities, both building resilience and becoming a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is resilient for the effects."
