Polls Open in the Netherlands as Polls Suggest Potential Repeat Victory for Geert Wilders

Voting has commenced for parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, with current polling data suggesting that the anti-immigration firebrand Geert Wilders and his Freedom party (PVV) could once again emerge victorious, though experts believe PVV is unlikely of joining the future coalition.

Survey Results and Election Dynamics

The PVV, which in the last election achieved a shock top result and formed a four-party all-conservative coalition that collapsed within a year, is now marginally ahead in surveys and is projected to win between 24 and 28 seats in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, PVV's support has declined since 2023, when it secured 37 parliamentary seats. All major parties have publicly ruled out forming a government with Wilders, and who triggered the fall of the previous government in June amid disagreements concerning his controversial anti-refugee plans.

Key Contenders and Projections

At the end of a election period dominated by issues such as migration, healthcare costs, and the country's severe housing shortage, the centre-left Green Left/Labour party alliance, led by former European commissioner Frans Timmermans, is placed a close second, expected to gain between 22 to 26 seats.

Also forecast to do well is the liberal-progressive D66, projected to boost its representation by almost five times to 21 to 25 seats, while the right-leaning CDA is anticipated to significantly increase its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

The outgoing cabinet members – comprising the Freedom Party, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all forecast to lose seats, with several experiencing significant declines.

Voting Process and Fragmentation

Under the proportional Dutch system, gaining just 0.67% of the national vote yields a party one MP. Of the 27 parties participating in the vote – including senior-focused parties, youth parties, for animals, basic income advocates, and sports parties – as many as 16 may gain entry to the legislature.

This significant division ensures that no single party is expected to win a majority, and Holland has been ruled by coalitions – typically composed of several groups in recent governments – for more than a century.

Post-Election Scenarios

The PVV leader claimed that "democracy will be dead" in the Netherlands if the his party ends up as the biggest group yet is shut out of government. However, opponents and experts argue that winning the most seats does not guarantee government participation and that any coalition with a parliamentary majority is democratically valid.

Although the final outcome is hard to predict and government negotiations may require months, analysts suggest that following the most radical administration in recent memory, the future government is expected to be a broad-based alliance led by either the centre-left or moderate right.

Election Day Details

Voting locations, including those in the miniature city Madurodam in the capital and the Anne Frank house in the capital city, began operations at 7.30am (6:30 GMT) and will conclude at 9pm. A typically reliable exit poll is anticipated shortly after closing time.

Once voting concludes, an official negotiator will test possible coalitions that could secure enough support in parliament. Potential partners will then negotiate an agreement for the coming term and must undergo a confidence vote in parliament before assuming power.
