A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the franchise into chicken products has been replaced after tensions with its board.
Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in charge, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a long-term chief.
Rennie, who worked for Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to shift Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the most rapidly expanding food category in the international market.
Sources suggest that there was tension between the CEO and the directors over his focus and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
In September, Domino's launched its Chick 'N' Dip offering – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is piloting it in select stores in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as intended, it views chicken products as an addition to its main pizza offerings.
Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing finding the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by one and a half percent in the Q3. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the period before the budget and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a significant fall in interim earnings.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the closing of multiple locations a recently, after the firm behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, the company has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its thin-crust line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a small has 909 kcal.
Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and was formerly with the gambling company William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to take on the chief executive role long-term.
She commented: “Our team has a several ongoing development and efficiency programs that we will be dedicated to implementing at speed.”
She added these comprised additional efforts on the company's procurement system and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also without a permanent chief financial officer until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. For now, Snow is temporary CFO.
