New Year's Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK

Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are due to be low, meaning extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this signified the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
