Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
