Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who once led the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted the economist's determination to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," OpenAI remarked.
This development comes after the two houses of Congress voted on recently to pass a legislation that would require the US justice department to disclose its files on the case.
The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. Trump has indicated he expects to endorse the legislation, after changing his position on the issue following pressure from his base.
A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails indicated that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.
After the messages were made available with the public, he said he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with the financier".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the people nearest to me".
The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the institution.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
