Bushfires Ravage WA as Thermal Readings Soar

Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the south-west.

Widespread Extreme Heat Alerts Across the Region

These conditions follow recent bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the loss of properties and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves to the east, bringing blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness recently after strong gusts damaged the urban electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. The stormy weather also led to significant transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further problems as utility companies scramble to restore power to more than 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Region

At the same time, a valley famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands

Turning to another country, a weather system has brought heavy rainfall, strong winds and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this popular tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the system brought some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snow, strong northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts exceeding 50mph observed on several locations. The effect of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more typical conditions returning.
