Blast Takes Three Police Officers While Executing Eviction Action in Italy

A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews entered the residence near the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene showed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was facing an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
