‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic

The debut appearance the Athletic striker played in English soil, an 18-year-old appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he scored. The second time he played in the country, against the Black Cats two months later, he converted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, sure enough, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker says, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed my contract, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Man United, the usual talk. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for the club, due in part to the pressures of being here. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching the showpiece event by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he states.

The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, the former star and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the Champions League.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, you have everything, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually the requirement appears in your position, recall is possible. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
