The ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth left Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Deployed

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to find the two vessels, which were had on board at least 9 crew members, as stated by a military release.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the nation struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety equipment and communication devices," a representative involved in the effort stated.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Aid Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Castro landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and food.

Larger Political Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the country began.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50k operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political tensions have intensified lately, with statements from different leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous proposals, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to discover the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
